”Robosoccer has taken me all around the world”

Lars Wikström graduated in 2008. He studied in the degree programme in Information Technology. During his studies he spent a year in Vienna, Austria as an exchange student and studied robotics and mechatronics there.

Your Motives to Choose VAMK? It was a great chance to meet new people, especially as I study in an international class where the Finns are in minority. I also found it good that we have two years of general studies before choosing a specialization alternative, it really helped me to find out what I was interested in. Along the way I have also developed my language and social skills in a good way by diving into a new environment.

Your Experiences of Practical Training? Part of my practical training I have gotten through the robot soccer project which is a really good addition to the theoretical lectures. I think practical training is important in order to be able to understand how to put theory in practice.

Your Opinion of the Degree Programme? The best courses have been the lab courses and some of the math courses which have really helped me to see how everything is connected. I’m also glad that I could study German at VAMK, it has been a huge advantage for me ever since, both professionally as well as personally. Of course there are some not so useful courses as well but with the right attitude you can learn something new from every situation.

The Best Memories of the Studies? There are so many good memories to choose from, but the highlights are the trips to Robocup 2006 in Bremen, Robocup 2007 in Atlanta and of course my time in Vienna as an exchange student. Other great moments I have had as a tutor for international exchange students and by meeting a lot of interesting people all around the world. Graduating was also of course a highlight.

Your Plans for the Future? I don’t plan to jump on the first job I can find just to get into the business. I will spend time on finding a job I really like. I have also planned to continue with a Master’s program abroad, but I don´t stress myself with thinking too far ahead. The future is open for you, if you are open for it!

The objective of the degree programme in Information Technology is to prepare students for demanding careers in the industry. The first year the students explore PC engineering along with computer game and micro support. In the years to follow, the education is focused on e.g. Hardware Orientation and Game Programming problems. The student’s ability to adapt to new tasks in the rapidly changing industry is emphasised. The degree programme provides a wide course selection. The education
relies on the modern facilities of the Technobothnia technology research laboratory and the high-level expertise of the lecturers.

Careers

Graduates have the competence to work in positions within design, research, production, marketing and product development in the field of electronics and information technology, as well as entrepreneurs or in international positions in export companies.

Study Methods

The degree programme provides a wide course selection. The education relies on the modern facilities of the Technobothnia technology research laboratory and the high-level expertise of the lecturers. Cooperation with the working life gives students good possibilities to participate in projects made for the industry throughout their studies. The students also have the opportunity to gain international experience by participating in student exchange or practical training abroad.
