Study Method

Traditional contact-teaching is complemented by working together in projects and practical exercises as well as independent studies in networks. Studies during the first years consist of, for example, entrepreneurship, data processing, communication, basics in mathematics and science, and the basics in one’s own field.

In the final stage of their studies, students focus on a specialisation of their choice. The degree also includes free-choice studies and language courses. All students have the opportunity to choose student exchange or work placement in one of the numerous foreign institutions in VAMK’s partner network.

Technobothnia Research Centre

Equipment in the Technobothnia Research Centre is modern and currently in use in the working-life. This, together with the sound professional skills of the teachers, ensures that students of Information Technology are ready for the rapidly changing challenges of the field.

One of the fascinating topics in the studies of Information Technology is robot soccer project, which brings together special features like mathematics, programming, electronics, telecommunications and mechanics under one continuous project. A practically-orientated and challenging project prepares the students for an easy shift into working-life and making careers with an eye on contacts to local industrial enterprises and software houses. Looking at real software, telecommunications and electronics challenges of the enterprises, the student gets a realistic idea of industrial product development and the latest trends of the field. Open Source technologies and the Linux environment are particularly utilised in studying systematic design processes and project management. Projects also acquaint future IT-engineers with cooperative skills and working in a multicultural environment.

Practical Training

Practical training, which is an essential part of the studies, is an excellent way to grow into ever more demanding tasks already during the studies and to move straight into working-life after graduation. Practical training furthers comprehension of learned information, develops professional skills and familiarises students with operation in an organisation and improves employment during the studies. Practical training consists of 30 credits, which roughly corresponds to a five-month work placement. In practice, the students work from the beginning of May until the end of August.

In addition to work placement, close cooperation with working-life offers students with interesting thesis subjects. Most of the IT students do their theses as an assignment for the working-life.

Comprehensive Mastery of the Profession

Vaasan ammattikorkeakoulu VAMK, University of Applied Sciences is using  a competence-based curriculum. Our student-centred teaching is based on learning results and competence as a whole instead of completion of disconnected study modules. Extensive competences make it easier for students to perceive their own development and to contribute to reaching their goals.

During the first two years, students develop from beginners to trainees and along with the specialised professional studies from professionals to experts. The studies are made up of extensive working-life-inspired competence modules in which generic and professional competences or skills are connected. This assures the knowledge, skills, competence, outlook and understanding needed in the profession.

There are six key competences common to all UAS fields: self-improvement, ethical competence, communicative and interactive skills, developmental competence, organisational and societal competence and internationality. In the field of technology there is an additional competence of mathematics and science.

In addition to the common key competences, each degree programme has 4 - 7 professional competences of its own. These are based on national field-specific competences and regional focus areas in vocational studies.
