“Meaningful real-life projects for the working life”

Senior Software Developer at Wapice Duy Nguyen moved to Vaasa from Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. His work mainly includes software development as well as supervising junior colleagues and some part of project management.

Your motives to choose VAMK? I chose VAMK out of other universities in Finland because of its location close to the sea, and its culture as the student city.

Your experiences of practical training? I started working at Wapice in June 2009 when I was still a first year student at VAMK. It was a new experience for me because I had to manage my time in order to study and work. The position supported my studies in a way that I was able to practice knowledge which I had learnt in the class in “real” customer projects. It was a very meaningful experience.

Your opinion of your studies? I found the “Software Engineering” course was the most useful one because I was able to practice a real-life project during the course. Some other courses were too basic and it would have been nice if those could be exchanged with more advanced courses.

Your “normal” work day? I usually go to work at around 8:30 am in the morning. What I usually do in the early morning when getting to the office is to check email, read some news from Yle and listen to some good music. After the coffee break, I will start getting into “real” work.

What is best in Vaasa? Vaasa is a peaceful city and I like that. It is also very safe place to stay, not only for me but also for my family. The city is surrounded by students, so it is very easy to find a friend here.

Your plans for the future? Currently, I am studying my PhD at the university. Although it is quite hard to do PhD and work at the same time, I wish I can complete this in the near future.
