The company has recently moved their production facilities from Oravainen to the city centre of Vaasa. The new premises also include a factory shop in which the company’s products are sold. The owner of the company and host for the visit Kenny Sundqvist is a former student and graduate of VAMK. In addition to Hemgården, Sundqvist also runs a historical restaurant close to the battle-field in Oravainen. He runs both companies together with his girlfriend Suvi Mäntylä, who is also a graduate of VAMK.

During the visit to Hemgården the group heard about the company’s operations as well as how the chocolate is produced.
-    We were offered coffee and chocolate tea together with a wide selection of chocolate pralines to taste and enjoy, tells senior lecturer Camilla Harald.

While tasting the various flavours the group discussed chocolate production, ingredients and global chocolate varieties. The students were also given opportunities to ask questions as well as to share their own countries’ chocolate eating traditions.

In teams the students developed a company and a product selection and a product launch for the fair. The developed products range was wide including many kinds of restaurants and cafes, food items as well as sports equipment together with computer products and services. Even exotic pets were seen.
The displayers had prepared well for the event: the stands were nicely decorated and an ample selection of confectionary and drinks were offered to the fair visitors. In addition to brochures and fliers lots of samples had been brought in.

The premises on the third floor festival hall in Raastuvankatu offered nice surroundings for the event, but the available area was a little tight for a ground of 100+ people. The aisles became too crowded and it was occasionally difficult to hear what was said. However, there was a lot of talking and laughter as the participants talked about the products and companies and took part in lotteries, quizzes and games.  People seemed to enjoy themselves and speak a lot of English while promoting their items!

World View day -event attracted a lot of VAMK students.

World View Day

The day started with the traditional World View Day which was held in the Festival Hall at the City Campus. 34 exchange students from 14 different partner universities and 7 countries were challenged to make presentations of their home universities, cities and countries.

Event attracted a lot of VAMK students who were interested in hearing more about the VAMK partner universities. On the basis of the information given VAMK’s students have several good partner universities to consider when planning exchange period abroad.

Erasmus 25-Year Anniversary Event

Erasmus mobility program celebrates its 25-year anniversary in 2012. International offices of the Institutes of Higher Education in Vaasa wanted to arrange an anniversary celebration in Tritonia Library.

The photo exhibition with pictures taken by present and former exchange students was opened at the beginning of the event. Exhibition can be found in the Tritonia Library (2nd floor) until the end of November.

The aim of The Startup Camp was to support attendees to create new business ideas and to develop those ideas viable by using LEAN Startup Methodologies.

– Agile development, quick prototypes, launching the product with minimal resources as well as user-friendly further development are the essential part of the event, tells Charlotta Sirén, the main organizer of the event.

The event began with open pitches on Thursday 31.5. Attendees brought their ideas and inspired others to join their team. Attendees took a real interest in the challenges and it was evident they were truly willing to further develop the ideas.

– It has been great to bring in entrepreneur ideas we have implemented in DC to Finnish culture. Lean Startup guides to action and continuous testing of business idea instead of over planning. This approach has produced several success stories in the United States, tells the host of the Camp, research visitor Kevin May from the George Washington University.

Over Friday 1.6. and Saturday 2.6. the teams focused on customer development, validating team ideas, practicing LEAN Startup Methodologies and building a minimal viable product. On Saturday evening teams presented their prototypes and received valuable feedback from a panel of experts.

Two mentors from BusinessFactory and seven students from Vaasa University of Applied Sciences participated in the Camp.

Yritysedustajat innokkaasti mukana

Yritysedustajat suhtautuivat erittäin positiivisesti tilaisuuksiin, koska ne ovat keino kertoa opiskelijoille yrityksistä ja niiden tarjoamista mahdollisuuksista. Lisäksi tilaisuudet ovat opiskelijoille tärkeä osa valmistautumista työelämään.

– Mielellämme osallistumme tilaisuuksiin, joihin on kutsuttu soveltuvassa koulutusohjelmassa olevia opiskelijoita. VAMKista valmistuvilla insinööreillä on erittäin hyvä maine Wärtsilässä, ja koulutus on laadukasta. Wärtsilässä on koko joukko VAMKista eri vuosikymmeninä valmistuneita mitä erilaisimmissa työtehtävissä, ja kokemuksemme ovat hyviä, ympäristöinsinööreille puhunut rekrytointipäällikkö Mika Palosaari kertoo.


– Toivottavasti saamme opiskelijoita kiinnostumaan yrityksestämme ja hakeutumaan meille töihin, Mika Palosaari Wärtsilästä toteaa.

Myös VAMKin entinen opiskelija, nykyään Citecillä työskentelevä Mikko Laine kertoi opiskelijoille ympäristöinsinöörin työtehtävistä sekä mitä tulee osata ja mihin kiinnittää huomiota hakiessaan työtä Citeciltä.

Avoimet työpaikat tiedoksi

Pauliina Palomäki, myös entinen VAMKin opiskelija, piti esityksen koneinsinööreille. Palomäki työskentelee päällikkötehtävissä Ship Power -osastolla Wärtsilässä.
– Valmistuvilla insinööreillä on jo jonkin verran tai enemmänkin työkokemusta takanaan. Perustiedot ovat hanskassa ja opintoaikana rakennettu verkosto toimii usein työllistymisen jälkeenkin. Työnantajille tällaiset tilaisuudet ovat oiva mahdollisuus tiedottaa avoimista työpaikoista sekä tilaisuuksien myötä on mahdollisuus jopa suorarekrytointiin.

YIT:n projektipäällikkö Juha Pöntinen sekä Contrialla työskentelevät suunnitteluinsinööri Kaisa Heikkinen ja projekti-insinööri Seppo Nissilä antoivat hyödyllistä tietoa valmistuville rakennusinsinööreille. He kertoivat urakoitsijan ja suunnittelutoimiston eri työtehtävistä ja niihin liittyvistä työprosesseista.  

YIT:n Juha Pöntinen antoi myös vinkkejä avoinna olevista työpaikoista.

Sähköinsinöörit saivat heille suunnattua työelämätietoa Wärtsilän Power Plants -osastolla kehitysinsinöörinä työskentelevältä Petri Tuomiolta. Eri puolilla maailmaa vuosien varrella työskennelleellä Tuomiolla oli paljon mielenkiintoista kerrottavaa opiskelijoille. Hänen kertomuksensa synnyttivät luokassa antoisan keskustelun.

Yritykset tutuksi valmistuville

Wärtsilässä IT-osastolla päällikkötehtävissä työskentelevä Tea Haavisto sekä Wapicen markkinointipäällikkö Henna Alppivuori pitivät infotilaisuuden pienelle mutta aktiiviselle tietotekniikan opiskelijaryhmälle.
– On tärkeää, että opiskelijat saavat kosketuksen työelämään eri yrityksiltä. Tietotekniikan amk-insinöörejä on wapicelaisista 46 prosenttia, joista moni on VAMKista. Toivommekin, että myös jatkossa saamme kyvykkäitä tietotekniikan insinöörejä teiltä. On tärkeää, että vaasalaiset opiskelijat tietävät Wapicen, joka on alueen suurin ohjelmistoyritys, Alppivuori kommentoi tilaisuutta.

Englanninkielisille Information Technology -opiskelijoille suunnatussa infotilaisuudessa yritysedustajina olivat Rafal Chomentowski Wapicelta ja Sahil Anand Wärtsilästä. He ovat molemmat VAMKin entisiä opiskelijoita, jotka ovat edistyneet hyvin työurillaan. Chomentowski tulee Puolasta ja Anand on intialainen.

Rafal Chomentowskin mukaan infotilaisuuksia tulisi järjestää myös ensimmäisen vuoden opiskelijoille, koska yritysedustajien kertomukset ovat omiaan motivoimaan kansainvälisiä opiskelijoita panostamaan opintoihinsa entistä enemmän. Lisäksi olisi tärkeää, että opiskelijat myös opiskeluaikana osallistuisivat eri projekteihin, jotka työhaastattelutilanteissa toimisivat hyvinä referensseinä.

Vastaavia infotilaisuuksia tullaan järjestämään myös tradenomeille ja restonomeille.

Markus Piispanen (vas.) ja Juuso Mörsky nauttivat nyt pelaamisesta. Opinnot VAMKissa valmistavat jääkiekkouran jälkeiseen elämään.

Ei vain lätkää

Opinnot tasapainottavat jääkiekkoilijoiden elämää ja antavat muuta mietittävää urheilun lomaan. Kampuksella myös tapaa ihmisiä joukkueen ulkopuolelta. Lisäksi kun on korkeakoulututkinto taskussa, ei jääkiekkouran jälkeen jää tyhjän päälle.

Ammattimaisen urheilun ja opiskelun sovittaminen yhteen ei käy tuosta vain. Opiskelu on itsenäisempää ja vastuu opintojen etenemisestä on pitkälti omissa käsissä. Juuso ja Markus kiittelevät suuresti opettajia joustavuudesta.
– Opiskelusta ei tulisi mitään, jos opettajat eivät antaisi siimaa. Myös opiskelukaverit auttavat, jos tuntuu että on pudonnut kärryiltä luennon jäätyä väliin.
Urheilusta on myös hyötyä koulun penkillä, vaikka opinnot viivästyisivätkin normaalitahdista. Jääkiekko on tulosurheilua, mikä vaatii pelaajilta kunnianhimoa ja määrätietoisuutta. Myös opiskelussa on tehtävä töitä saavutusten eteen.

Jääkiekko toi nuoret miehet Vaasaan puolitoista vuotta sitten.
– Parasta on että Vaasa on opiskelijakaupunki ja täynnä samanikäistä porukkaa. Todella viihtyisä kaupunki, joskin välillä tuntuu pienikokoiselta, pääkaupunkiseudulta muuttanut Markus miettii.

VAMK University of Applied Sciences, Vaasa Region Development Company VASEK and the EnergyVaasa network are looking for an Energy Ambassador from June to August 2012. The energy ambassador's job consists of getting to know the Vaasa region and its top energy technology companies by working one week for each company and to share the experiences mainly in the social media.  For the three-month job, the ambassador will earn 30,000 euro plus a number of benefits including four-star accommodation, car, occupational health care, banking and investment services and daily consumer goods, arranged by the campaign partners.

– Vaasa region is the Nordic leader in energy technology and it has the best employment situation in all of Finland as well as all elements needed for a happy life. Not everybody knows about this and that is why we need an energy ambassador, says Suvi Markko, the Vaasa region’s Communications Manager at VASEK.  

– The companies in the region offer challenging and international work duties for competent persons especially in the field of technology. It is of great importance for us to attract skilled and competent workforce to the region, tells Robert Olander, Marketing Director at Technology Centre Merinova.

A number of top companies and organizations in the region participate in the campaign with the common goal of bringing the region and its energy technology cluster the attention it deserves. The ambassador’s employers will be ABB, Wärtsilä, Vaasa Energy Institute (VAMK University of Applied Sciences and University of Vaasa), Mervento, Citec, Wapice, VAMP, VNT Management, Vaasan Sähkö, Leinolat Group, Stormossen and VASEK.
