Vaasa is an excellent place to move around on foot or by bike. There is also a good public transportation system. The local bus network is rather extensive. Purchasing a monthly (20 ˆ (05/2008)) or multiple trip (40 trips/38 ˆ) ticket is recommended, since no special discount is available for students from single tickets.

A driver’s licence issued in another Nordic country or in a country belonging to the European Union is needed to drive a car in Finland. Foreigners who have a driver’s licence issued in a country that has signed the Road Traffic Convention of Geneva or Vienna are entitled to drive in Finland with their licence for one year from the date of the licence holder’s entry to Finland. Students coming from the countries that have not signed the Convention need to obtain a Finnish driving licence in order to drive in Finland.

Ferry lines operating regularly between Finland and other countries grant discounts to students. In order to receive the discount the students must present valid proof of student status. The amount of the discount varies from one company to another. Kilroy, Area and Suomen Matkatoimisto travel agencies are good places for students to book domestic or international flights.

BIKES

Vaasa is a city of students and therefore a city of bikes. International students often prefer to rent a bike for getting around the city faster. A student can rent a second hand bike from a good bike shop. The bike will cost 100 – 200 ˆ and when returning it together with the receipt you will get half of the price back.

LOCAL BUS

The local bus is also a handy way to get around Vaasa. Students can get some discount for 30-day ticket and 40-trip tickets.
